It is the role of a shaving brush to create lather out of a shaving cream or a shaving soap, and then spread that lather over the shaver's face in such a way that it softens the whiskers and cushions the skin. The bristles on the brush are absorbent, meaning that the brush will take in the prefect amount of water when the shaver wets the brush. The brush is then mixed through a shaving cream or a shaving foam, where the bristles release the water that they are holding. The motion of the brush also drags air into the mixture, lightening the density of the soap or cream and creating a rich lather that is perfect for shaving. In all handles, the stale water will provide a breeding ground for bacteria. Over time, mold will begin to grow in the handle, and that mold will nest in the bristles of the brush.
