Although all shaving brushes are designed to serve the same purpose, shaving brushes actually have different forms in order to work best with different kinds of products. Each shaving brush is meant to create a lather to be spread across the skin and cushion the skin from the sharpness of the razor's blade. However, the different brushes work well with different products and provide the skin with different kinds of care. One of the basic distinctions between brushes comes with the shape of the brush loft and the different impact that shape can have on the lather. There are two major categories of brushes that The Art of Shaving brush shapes that all brushes fall under, bulb-shaped lofts and fan-shaped lofts.

Bulb-shaped lofts contain bristles that have been shaped or trimmed so that the shape of the bristle loft resembles a light bulb or a dome. Because this style is often the one employed by German shaving brush makers, it is often referred to as "European style" brushes. These brushes have shorter hair on the outside edge of the loft, making the taller center of the loft feel denser. Because of the length of these bristles the brush does not spread out very far. This tight bundle of bristles allows the shaver to control the spread of the lather and is excellent for applying lather to the face. However, because there is a smaller amount of bristle to work with, these brushes have difficulty creating a good, rich lather.
Fan-shaped lofts are made up of bristles that are spread out to be just as long on the ends as in the middle, resembling the shape of a fan. These brushes are characteristic of British shaving brush makers and so are sometimes referred to as "English style" brushes. Because the hair on the outside edge is longer, these brushes generally feel fuller than their dome shaped counterparts. Because of the uniform length of the bristles, all of the bristles are capable of picking up lather and then spreading it out where ever they touch. This means that brushes from places like The Art of Shaving are not ideal for putting lather on the face. However, the abundance of bristles means that this brush can soak up more water and distribute it to the lather. This water distribution means that the lather created is denser than the lather created by bulb-shaped brushes.
